If your original crown is cracked through to the flue tile or has big sections loose, the sealant can’t bridge that. You need the masonry rebuilt or the crown re-poured first. We typically apply HeatShield over a fresh crown to give it the longest life. The material is made for about a 10 to 15 year service life when installed correctly. In South Jersey’s humidity and freeze-thaw cycles, plan on 10 years between re-coats and you won’t be disappointed.
Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Chalky white streaks running down the brick face. This is efflorescence, and it means water has made its way past the HeatShield layer and is dissolving minerals inside the masonry. The bigger the streaks, the longer water’s been getting in.
- Pieces of gray coating showing up in your gutters or on the roof. If you can see flakes of the old HeatShield material, it’s delaminating. Water found a pinprick gap at the edge, worked underneath, and started lifting the membrane from the concrete.
- Damp spots on the interior ceiling near the chimney chase. Water travels. By the time it shows up inside the house, the crown has been leaking for a while. The water follows the path of least resistance, and that’s usually down the flue brick and into the drywall.
- Pieces of spalled brick on the ground around the chimney base. The crown’s whole job is to shed water away from the brick below. When it fails, the top few courses absorb water, freeze, and pop their faces off. You’ll see orange clay shards in the garden.
- A musty smell from the fireplace that gets stronger after rain. Water settling into the flue system picks up creosote and ash odor and pushes it into the room. If the fireplace smells like a wet campfire, water’s getting in somewhere, and the crown is the prime suspect.

DIY or Call Us?
